Convenience trumped basic features such as manual steering, while electric steering (as opposed to hydraulic systems) has threatened to eradicate steering feel altogether. Automakers seeking cost savings have removed features such as ashtrays and cigarette lighters, lockable glove boxes, the high-beam foot pedal and even dedicated clothes hooks. More disconcertingly, the spare tire - full or compact - is rapidly being displaced by an aerosol can of tire sealant. New audio technology has banished the tape deck to the graveyard, with the CD player soon to follow. Can the beloved manual gearbox be that far behind? Oh wait ... some manufactures, such as Chrysler have even started to delete that.
