These roadgoing works of art harked back to a time when radiators formed the face of every vehicle, and the radiator cap became a decorative fixture on top (some even incorporated a temperature gauge to forewarn the driver about an imminent boil-over). Custom-designed ornaments were popular in the 1920s, but the car makers themselves got into the act with evermore stylized statues that exuded the brand, such as the archer on Pace-Arrows and Chief Pontiac on early Pontiac sedans.
