As long as there have been radios in cars, there have been unsightly antennas to capture broadcast signals. The simple mast antenna was a reliable fixture on car fenders for decades - until, invariably, the metal mast was snapped off by a car wash, tree branch or neighbourhood kid. Dealers made a tidy income selling replacement masts and retractable ones, too. The power antenna was a welcome advancement, until it seized due to a lack of lubrication or accumulated ice, making it a target for local vandals just the same.
