You'd think running a multi-billion-dollar international enterprise would be a nerve-wracking job just keeping everybody employed, avoiding product liability lawsuits and staving off bankruptcy. Yet, somehow, the car companies still find time to have a few laughs. Case in point is their tradition of marking April Fool's Day.
In the Middle Ages, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25, starting a week-long party that ended on the 1st of April. When the first day of the year was moved to January, not everyone got the memo. Those who continued to celebrate the New Year in April were considered fools, hence the day's name.
Today, April 1 is widely recognized and celebrated as a day which tolerates practical jokes and unbridled foolishness perpetuated by the media and, apparently, automobile manufacturers. Here is some of their best work.
