The next year, Dickmanns and his team continued pursuit of the driverless car, this time in a re-engineered S-Class, the luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz. The autonomous Benz made a 1,600 km trip from Munich to Copenhagen, using saccadic computer vision and transputers to adjust to real-time traffic. At times, on the German Autobahn, the S-Class exceeded speeds of 175 km/h, and showed an increasing ability to drive without human intervention. According to the study notes, the Mercedes completed the trip using 95 per cent autonomous driving, once driving 158 km straight without assistance from Dickmanns or his engineers.
