Before LAN parties and online gaming there was multiplayer. Some of the experiences were good (like the aforementioned Ironman Super Off Road); most were bad. Some of the best were found on the N64, where its goofy three-pronged controller allowed three of your friends to plug in and join you. Besides GoldenEye 007 (that's for another top 10 list) the king of the multiplayer games was Mario Kart 64. Four-player matches were epic battles that could last hours. It was the first in the series to offer this, and it's still the best.
