Un-parkable cars, spider infestations, faulty airbags, seatbelts that trap you... and much more
Three years ago, Mazda announced a recall of its 6 midsize sedan for a very unlikely cause: spiders. The Yellow Sac spider, attracted to the car by the smell of gasoline, would spin webs in an area by the gas tank blocking the evaporative canister vent lines. This in turn caused pressure to build on the car’s fuel system, which ultimately caused cracks to form resulting in spilled fuel. As a result, some 65,000 sedans made between 2009 and 2010 were recalled.
Well, those pesky spiders are back at it again. Mazda issued on April 4 a second recall for 42,000 sedans with 2.5-liter engines from model years 2010 to 2012 in the United States over the same issue. Thankfully, nobody in the first or second recalls were injured or killed.
In honour of Mazda's, shall we say, thorough recall, MSN looks back at other strange and weird recalls in auto history.
