World’s straightest road: Kalgoorlie, Australia
The Eyre Highway is a near-1,700-km cut through Australia's untamed west. Nearly abandoned by life and remotely populated, the road is designed to get the country's gigantic road trains from one end of the continent to the other with as little disturbance as possible. One stretch along the Nullarbor Plain in Kalgoorlie lays claim to the straightest stretch of road in the world. The '90 Mile Straight' between Balladonia and Caiguna is exactly as it sounds: 146 km of smooth uninterrupted tarmac with no deviations from dead ahead. Because there are so few towns and resources in the area, portions of the stretch are designated as emergency landing zones for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
