More Power, Better Balance
Last week, we reported that Mercedes-Benz had revised its G-Class for 2009, and that the new model's biggest improvement is the addition of the new 5.5-litre V8 engine. At the time, Mercedes-Benz remained mum about the G55, and so we'd assumed it had been discontinued. It turns out that this isn't the case.
The highest performance G-Class will once again sport the supercharged 5.5-litre three valve per cylinder V8 engine, but, thanks in part to a new ECU, power has been upgraded to 507 horsepower. This allows the G-Class to hit 100 km/h in a matter of 5.5 seconds, and press on unhindered, despite its brick-like aerodynamics, to 210 km/h, its electronically limited top speed.

Other enhancements the new G55 features include a revised ESP program that allows better control over the vehicle, improving its stability in the corners. Also standard is full hill start assist.
Like the rest of the G-Class range, the G55 features a handful of minor exterior changes, but specific to this AMG version are chromed slats on the grille, and brand new 19-inch alloy wheels that are similar in design to those fitted to SL- and CL-Class AMG products. Other signature details for the G55 include a stylish AMG bodykit, stainless steel running boards, and awesome side-mounted exhaust pipes located in front of the rear wheels.
Being the most expensive G-Class, starting at 121,618 euro, the G55 comes fully loaded with the "designo" interior package that includes full-leather upholstery, heated and ventilated seats (a first for a G-Class) and the new COMAND APS navigation system with built-in hard drive.
