They just didn’t make cars like that anymore. And then suddenly they did.

That was the miracle worked by Mazda when the original MX-5 Miata burst upon an unsuspecting world 25 years ago. But while the MX-5 has since become an icon and an institution, the birth announcement of the all-new fourth-generation car is a miracle all over again. As the auto industry becomes increasingly driven by the economies of scale that come from huge production volumes, we feared that little Mazda – now divorced from long-time partner Ford – could not continue to manufacture, let alone completely redesign, a niche car that shares virtually  not a single component with its mainstream products.
