The HHR, which stands for heritage high roof, is a small retro-style wagon based on the Cobalt. On sale since 2005, it is GM's answer to to the now discontinued Chrysler PT Cruiser. Of the roughly two dozen vehicles in the IIHS's small-car category, nine earned top-pick honours. The little Chevy wasn't one of them.

The HHR scored only an acceptable rating in side impacts, despite having side airbags, and marginal on rear hits. The NHTSA tested a 2010 - before toughening standards for this model year - and gave it five stars in all but the rollover category.
