While up to 90 per cent of American students spend their freshman year in campus residence, most Canuck learners are well-traveled commuters, usually living off campus or at home while pursuing higher education.

For many of them, a cheap and reliable used car becomes an attractive alternative to riding two or three buses to reach a distant, often suburban, campus. We've scoured the second-hand market to uncover 10 models that are inexpensive to operate and insure, and which promise to whisk tomorrow's leaders to class reliably and safely. We've set a macaroni-and-cheese budget of $5,000 so, sadly, there are no mid-engine Italian roadsters in this bunch.
