During the height of the second "energy crisis" in 1979, one bumper sticker - spotted on the sagging butt of a Mercury Grand Marquis - boldly conveyed the public's exasperation with world oil prices. "Save gas. Fart in a jar" wasn't so much a joke as it was a defiant backlash to a questionable calamity.

Today we're coming to the realization that the price of fuel hasn't "spiked" so much as it's adopted an upward trajectory that's running parallel to consumers' collective blood pressure. However, our dependence upon fossil fuel isn't about to change anytime soon. The trick is to use less of it.
