Because it's the most fuel efficient AWD vehicle around, you need a Suzuki SX4. It's not quite the cheapest since the 4x4 Jeep Compass came along, but it offers a more sprightly hatchback package and 9.1 L/100 km city; 6.3 L/100 km highway fuel economy numbers. Decently equipped for about $23 grand, enjoy air conditioning (but not until, oh, June or so), power windows, locks and heated mirrors, remote keyless entry, steering wheel-mounted audio, and a roof rack for your winter sporting gear. Select 2WD, AWD or "auto" mode at the flip of a switch. Add on ESP (Electronic Stability Program) for ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control and stability control, and you've got yourself a comfy, fun-to-drive hatch with respectable winter handling.
